International Tribe is a weekly mix series hosted by Thris Tian. This week’s International Tribe mix comes from the collective Kawuku Sound. Kawuku Sound is the collaborative project between friends Contours & Cervo with the Ugandan percussion troupe, Fonkodelis Arkestra. The project was born out of the Nyege Nyege affiliated Boutiq Studio in Kawuku, Kampala – Uganda. Their sound blends traditional Ugandan instruments such as engalabi drums and adungu, field recordings of boda horns and sliding matatu doors, with bass driven riffs and trance-inducing rhythms. Their forthcoming album entitled Kawuku Sound is out on the 8th of October on the Banana Hill imprint. They will also be throwing a launch party at Eastern Bloc Recordings in Manchester on the 13th of October to celebrate the release. For their mix, the duo delves into some of the music that inspired the Kawuku Sound project, from the polyrhythmic drumming excursions of Hu Vibrational and the drummers of Burundi, through to the spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders and trance-like percussion of A.K Salim.
