SHITTY CITY (old demo, circa 2009)
MOONFACE unreleased leftovers & random demos

This is the original demo for what eventually got reworked with rock band Siinai for the Heartbreaking Bravery LP. It's, uh... a little pitchy

THE WAY YOU WISH (unreleased track from Organ Music sessions, circa 2010)
MOONFACE unreleased leftovers & random demos

I remember not including this on Organ Music because I didn't love the singing & lyrics. I stand by that criticism still, but now I think the music is kind of cool, and it's been long enough, right? Like it's not me anymore who did this anyway.

RETURN TO THE VIOLENCE... (acoustic guitar demo, circa 2009)
MOONFACE unreleased leftovers & random demos

Some songs for Moonface's ORGAN MUSIC were written, ironically, on acoustic guitar. This is the original demo, circa 2009, for 'Return to the Violence...' A lot of these lyrics were ultimately changed. I'm not sure what I was on about. I have a megaphone, made out of sand Sometimes it slips through my fingers, back onto the beach In some kind of lust... To return to the violence of the ocean floor… But I gather it up, grain by grain I have to keep it safe I have some things to say I have to push some things through it Like, push some plastic rings through it Or, push a plastic rendering of my heart through it See the heart swell on the far side, and... See the heart fall In some kind of lust To return to the violence of the ocean floor… To the chaos, and the fairness… So I kneel down, into the sand, with my acrylics To paint a portrait of a hopeless romantic Upon the heart's smooth red surface Then I take my megaphone made of sand, and I I take the plastic heart with the romantic on it, and I I put them both into my car And I drive, and I drive them down To where the aquariums are…

COMING TO AT DAWN (unreleased alt version from 2008)
MOONFACE unreleased leftovers & random demos

Apparently in 2008 I recorded 2 solo versions of this song. This is the version that didn't make the 7 inch. It's... angrier? Found it a few days ago. Mixed it last night on a laptop. Not the best sound quality but whatever there it is...

RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE (unreleased cover from Moonface & Siinai, 2011 HBB sessions)
MOONFACE unreleased leftovers & random demos

Don't know why we did this, but we did. Recently learned this song isn’t actually about Vietnam, but gun control, so it seems apt as ever to bring a new version into the world, however untamed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_Through_the_Jungle This recording was originally 10 min long, a real jammer, so I cut out some middle chunks, which, if anything, is a testament to the steadiness of Markus’ drumming. No click track!

STILL A CRIMINAL (unreleased piano track from Julia sessions, circa 2012)
MOONFACE unreleased leftovers & random demos

I spent the money. I got the clothes. I looked alright There was a dreamlike quality to the way the streets Took the streetlight I didn't go to the party. I took a walk down the hill to the sea Still a criminal Still free Live free or die Said the blessedly and terrifyingly empty sky I cut my hair. I cut down on alcohol. I cut some songs I said a prayer for the angel I'm pretty sure my mother believes in I made a point of being where decent people Made a point of telling me I should be But I was still a criminal Still free But I know how to live A leopard in the tree Yes I know how to live How to live just like an ordinary guy Live free or die said the orphan to the prince Live free or die said the dying fire Live free or die said the parrot to the parrot And the scissor to the wing, and the wing to the scissor Live free or die Said the poet in the coffin Said the elephant to the ocean The mountaineer to the sailor And the sailor to the earth And the boy with no toys And the comedian to the computer And the hand to the finger The hand to the finger The hand to the finger The music fan to the musician Like the wind to the mediocre dancer Live free or die Said the blessedly and terrifyingly empty sky But I know how to live A leopard in the tree Yes I know how to live How to live just like an ordinary guy
